Local Bocal September 2020

Dear Double Reeders,

We have come to the end of our Mini Blow series as it appears that most players are back to their lessons and groups, however tentatively.

Here is a message from Jane Downer an ex-pat Adelaidean, now living in England.

“I hope everyone has been keeping well during this pernicious global health crisis. One positive from this situation, is that wherever you are in the world, you can attend the Australasian Double Reed Society National Conference which is being held online on Saturday 19th September. Here is a link to the schedule with such contributions as:

  • Anne Gilby Masterclass: “Authentic” Baroque on Modern
  • Geoffrey Burgess    From the Memoirs of Caspar Gleditsch, Oboist to Johann Sebastian Bach
  • Mark Bruwel           The Art of Playing Second Oboe
  • Matthew Ockenden   Bassoon Reedmaking and Troubleshooting
  • Ole Kristian Dahl      Interview
  • Sophie Dervaux       Interview

5.30 - 6.30pm AEST in “Room 1”:

A DROP OF GOLDEN SUN [by Jane Downer]

The early hautboy was characterised by the colourful tonal contrast within its natural scale. This presentation will focus on the addition of keywork to the oboe from its inception to the modern day, giving rise to discussion about tone, and how the distinct aural characteristics of tonalities might influence one’s expressive approach to performing a piece. “

Thanks, Jane for this information. The ADRSSA Committee urges you all to “attend” on the day. There will be something for everyone and you won’t have to go to Melbourne.
